Fighting Escalates as Troops Forge Ahead Eliminating Terrorists

image   WANNI & NORTH: FIERCE FIGHTING for supremacy in NAVATKULAM, PALAMODDAI, UYLANKULAM, SINNAPULIYANPERUMAL, VANNARIKULAM and NACHCHIKUDA areas in the VAVUNIYA and MULLAITTIVU districts during Monday (18) inflicted death on twenty-three Tiger terrorists and injury to at least twenty-one more.      Pitched battles in NAVATKULAM, PALAMODDAI, UYLANKULAM, SINNAPULIYANPERUMAL and VANNARIKULAM between 9.30 a.m. – 4.00 p.m. killed nineteen terrorists, despite resistance offered by terrorists. Three terrorists died due to explosion of an anti personnel mine in VANNARIKULAM area around 4.00 p.m. on Monday (18).      Two dead bodies of the terrorists, one Rocket Propeller Gun (RPG), four T-56 weapons, six RPG bombs, one compass, one ICOM set and one Global Positioning System (GPS) were later found by the troops in the aftermath of the fighting at UYLANKULAM area.     Similar, ferocious battles in NACHCHIKUDA and VANNARIKULAM in the MULLAITTIVU fronts on Monday (18) deprived the LTTE of thirteen terrorists when they tried to desperately resist troops’ advance into Tiger strongholds.      Meanwhile, close fighting in ANDANKULAM, KOKKUTUDUVAI and deep jungles in the north of JANAKAPURA in the WELIOYA sector killed one terrorist and injured sixteen more. Parallel search and clear operations in those areas in the meantime uncovered 186 anti personnel mines, 18 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), 150 T-56 ammunition rounds and three magazines.      During day’s clashes two soldiers paid with death and six soldiers received injuries in NACHCHIKUDA, VANNARIKULAM, ANDANKULAM and KOKKUTUDUVAI battle fronts.      Meanwhile, Tiger terrorists in JAFFNA, using mortar fire struck Forward Defence Lines in MUHAMALE area early morning on Monday (18). The enemy fire killed three soldiers and injured one. Similarly, three soldiers received injuries when an LTTE trapped anti personnel mine exploded in NAGARKOVIL area around 5.30 in the morning on Monday (18).
